Wirsig gains valuable experience at first state golf tourney

Richmond junior Ava Wirsig shook off a bad start to her first round of the Class 1 State Golf Championships in Columbia Monday and appeared to be ready for a much better second day. However, Mother Nature stepped in and washed away Tuesday’s round and reduced the state tournament to just one day.

Wirsig ended her tournament with a 103, which put her in 65th place for her first state appearance. She opened her round Monday on the front nine and then ran into trouble, according to coach Murray Dennis.

“She was playing well until she reached No. 6, a 112-yard par-3 over water to an elevated green with out of bounds behind and to the left,” he said.
