Turnovers and missed scoring opportunities haunted the Richmond Spartans again Friday night at St. Pius. St. Pius scored on the second play of the game and held off a second-quarter charge by the Spartans on the way to a 41-22 victory in the first round of the Class 3, District 8 playoffs. The third-seeded Warriors, now 5-5 for the season, will travel to Maryville Friday to meet the second-seeded Spoofhounds who knocked off Lincoln Prep 69-26. Maryville defeated St. Pius back in the second week of the season, 40-20.

For the Spartans, they end the year at 4-6, but coach Rob Bowers was proud of how his young squad improved each week.

“They got better – a lot better – and tonight we were playing three freshmen along the offensive line, and on the defensive line we had three freshmen and two sophomores most of the time,” he said. “I’m really proud of how far the young kids have come and how much better they’ve gotten. I’m really proud of the older kids. They played outstanding and kept us in games most of the year.”
