Elmer Dee ‘DD’ O’Dell

Elmer Dee “DD” O’Dell, of Richmond, passed away peacefully with family by his side, early Monday morning, at 12:43 a.m., Oct. 23, 2017, at his home in Richmond.

He lived as a proud Naval fireman and was granted an earthly life of, 77 years, 7 months and 16 days.
It was on March 7, 1940, in Richmond, that the Lord blessed Roy Andrew and Izetta (Jeffers) O’Dell with the gift of a son. He was born the third child of a total of seven children. He attended school in Richmond and when DD was only 17 years old, he proudly enlisted with the United States Navy. He soon realized how big the world truly was when he was in the middle of the Pacific Ocean on the U.S.S. Wiltsie DD-716 destroyer. He visited many beautiful places while in the service, such as: Hawaii, Japan and Okinawa. His occupation while on the Wiltsie was as a fireman. While on land, he was stationed at the U.S. Naval Station in San Diego, Calif., and the 9th Naval District, Great Lakes, Ill.

DD worked for Green’s Quarries and was a heavy equipment operator and maintenance man for several apartment complexes. He lived mostly in Richmond, but also resided in Minnesota, Blue Springs and Excelsior Springs. DD was a Christian and believed in God as his Father and was of the Baptist faith.

DD’s favorite activity was dancing the two-step. He was a very good cook and DD’s favorite pastime was to be near a pond or lake with a line in the water. He loved to catch all types of fish, but crappie was his fish of choice.  In the evening he would always have a PBR in front of the television, watching The History Channel, a variety of crime scene programs or a documentary. He loved all animals, but he had a special way with cats.

DD is survived by his longtime friend, Margaret Ann Burton; his children, Elmer Dee O’Dell Jr., Deanna O’Dell, Michael O’Dell, Johnnie Dee (Barb) O’Dell, Brooke Elaine (Rick) Lindsey, Scott Burton, Shawna Foxall and Susan Burton; three brothers, Bobby (Meredith) O’Dell, Ronald “Boco” (Hazel) O’Dell, and Freddy (Ruth Ann) O’Dell; two sisters, Donna Sue (Wesley) Hewitt, and Cindy Kay (Mark); 15 grandchildren, Ashley, Nick, Maranda, John Matthew, Little Mike, Burgandy, Justin, Jesse, Eric, Stephanie, Jessica, Theresa, Matthew, Ashley and Nathan; 20 great-grandchildren; and a host of neighbors and friends that enjoyed DD’s company.
DD was preceded in death by his parents; a cherished daughter, Christy Lynn (O’Dell) Koontz; two step-daughters, Vickie Burton and Kathy Burton; a sister, Peggy Essig; and one grandson, Christopher O’Dell.

Graveside services are 4 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017, at Woodland Cemetery, Richmond, with Chaplain Bill Purcell officiating.

A final wish of DD’s was to have his visitation take place outdoors, which will commence one hour prior to the service, from 3 to 4 p.m. at the cemetery.

He will be peacefully laid to rest in Woodland Cemetery, where there will be a tribute with full military honors, provided by the Ray County Veterans Association and the United States Navy.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that any memorial contributions be made to the donor’s choice in memory of DD.
