George W. Finley

George W. Finley, 82, of Hardin, died unexpectedly Friday, Sept. 8, 2017, at Ray County Memorial Hospital, Richmond.

George was born Feb. 13, 1935, in Braymer, the son of Harvey S. and Ruby M. McNelly.  He was united in marriage to Barbara Ann Hardin, of Carrollton, April 26, 1962; she survives of the home.

Additional survivors include: two daughters and two sons-in-law, Karen and Larry Abbott, of Richmond, and Jacqueline and Kevin Duffett, of Richmond; three brothers, Alva Finley, of Excelsior Springs, Otto Finley, and his friend, Penny Buckner, of Norborne, and John and Barbara Finley, of Norborne; one sister, Mary Sue Willis, and her friend, Eugene McWilliams, of Carrollton; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

George was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Karla Utley; two brothers-in-law, Jack Hardin and Bob Willis; and one grandson, Christopher Utley.

George worked as a mechanic at Ray County Implement for 25 years.  He then worked for Ray County Road District for 15 years.  He also farmed with his brother John.  He lived most of his life in the Hardin and Stet areas.  He attended Bethany Church of the Brethren.  He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.  He was a United States Army veteran.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the family’s choice.

Visitation is 7 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 12, at Thurman Funeral Home, Richmond. Funeral services are 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 13, at the funeral home. Burial, with military honors provided by Ray County Veterans, will be in New Hope Cemetery, North of Hardin.  Online condolences may be left at
