Sisterly sign makers create ‘She Shed’ business

Sisters-in-law Carla and Cheryl Hogan work together to put words on wood

One aspect Carla Hogan, right, and her sister-in-law Cheryl Hogan appreciate about running their own business is that they can be flexible. It gives Cheryl time to watch her granddaughter, Eden; Carla will also be a grandmother soon. (Photo by Sara Seidel/Richmond News)

It’s a shop that would meet any woodworker’s dreams. It’s just the right size, with just the right equipment, in just the right place.

It’s not, however, just any woodworker who occupies it. It’s Carla Hogan’s workspace, and in it, Carla and her sister-in-law, Cheryl Hogan, are finding a niche in the woodworking world, creating distinctive signs and furnishings to fit just about any décor.

Carla’s shop is in her backyard in Richmond, in a building originally intended to serve as a garden shed. When it was under construction, it looked a bit like a church, so she thought she might dub it “Chapel of Carla.”

One of the builders, Steve Brown, suggested a different moniker.

“He said, ‘This is Carla’s she shed,’” Carla said.

Ultimately, Carla named the business she now runs out of the building She Shed Creations.

“Because who knows that’s going to be made out of that shop?” Carla asked. “We don’t know.”

Started in September 2016, the woodworking business “just kind of took off,” Carla said.
