There are the 3Rs from school, and then there are the 2Rs for the National Guard.

Well, two “Rs” and an “A,” to be more specific.

And Staff Sgt. David White is in charge of them all.

“It’s a three-tenet mission,” he said. “Recruiting, retention and attrition management.”

White – who’s been at the armory in Richmond since December and was recently promoted to his new rank – likes recruiting best.

“Put people in boots,” he said.

Retention, however, is critical.

“Once I put them in boots, I am to follow them throughout their careers,” he said. “I want to keep you in for as long as you are willing.”

Finally, there’s attrition.

“Attrition is a loss,” he said. “I make sure that we’re not losing people for unnecessary reasons.”
