The boys of fall are using the heat of summer to get ready for the 2016 football season. Richmond coach Rob Bowers and his staff got a good look at their squad last week during a camp held at Richmond High School. Bowers said you can normally count on the hot weather to get started about the same time he holds camp.

“Every time we have the camps, it’s always the hottest week of the summer,” he said. “It’s been nice so far up to this point and now it comes out hot and humid.”

The campers were issued several water breaks and the staff kept a close eye on them to avoid any heat-related problems.

It was mostly a veteran Spartan squad at camp with 18 seniors, including eight who started last season, attending. Bowers said with that much experience, the team knows what to expect.

“The kids kind of know the tempo we’re looking for – what kind of effort we’re looking for and that sort of thing,” he said. “We’re not trying to change the culture – we’re just trying to learn.”

Bowers adds he is trying to close the gap between the younger players and the older ones and he is impressed with work effort shown by his more experienced Spartans.
