ISO ratings a factor as fire agencies continue talks

The ongoing negotiations between two area firefighting agencies might seem to have little direct impact on the residents those agencies serve.

The ability of those agencies to resolve their differences could, however, mean dollars in – or out – of the pockets of every property owner within the city limits of Richmond as well as within the boundaries of the area’s rural fire protection district.

The Richmond Fire Department and the Richmond Fire Protection District are both examining their ISO ratings – scores that reflect the overall effectiveness of any given firefighting agency and that help determine insurance premiums for property owners served by the agency.

The Richmond Fire Department plans to seek a re-evaluation of its rating, and the Richmond Fire Protection District has been examining its own ratings since it asked voters to approve the formation of the district just over a year ago.
