Jamborees kickoff fall seasons this week

By Russ Green/Sports Editor

The beginning of the high school fall athletic seasons are right around the corner and it begins Friday night with football jamborees, while the Richmond Lady Spartans will warm up for the new year with a softball jamboree in Excelsior Springs the following day.

All of the area teams will be on the field Friday as they make last-minute preparations for the 2015 campaigns. Coach Rob Bowers and his Richmond Spartans will head north to Jerry Litton Memorial Stadium. The Spartans will be part of a four-team scrimmage featuring the hometown Hornets, along with Grain Valley and Smithville.

Each team will have 12 plays on offense and 12 on defense. The offense begins its drives on its own 40-yard line. If a team does not get a first down, the ball goes back to the 40. Penalties that are declined or result in a loss of down will count as one of the 12 plays during the scrimmage. There will be no kicking plays during the scrimmage.

The Spartans will play Smithville in the first session on the south end of the field, while Chillicothe will go against Grain Valley on the other end. In the second session, Richmond and Grain Valley will play on the south end, with Chillicothe and Smithville meeting on the north.

The final session of the night has the Spartans and Hornets on the north end of the field, with Grain Valley facing Smithville on the opposite end.

Admission for the jamboree is $5 for adults and $3 for students.
