Netmen fall in regular season finale

Playing short-handed, the Spartan tennis team closed out the regular season Tuesday night with a 3-6 loss to Grain Valley at the Maurice Roberts Park courts. The Spartans honored their eight seniors, with two of them Chase Shipley and Javier Lozano picking up wins in the final home appearance.

Coach Julie Baker said she will miss the seniors who fill out the top eight in her lineup, and missing Ryan Sanders from Tuesday night’s match made it tough.

“I wish we had him tonight,” she said. “When everybody plays up a spot, it made a tremendous difference.”

Shipley won his No. 1 singles match 8-5, and Lozano was an 8-2 winner in the No. 2 position.

“Chase and Javier both implemented great game plans on their opponents,” Baker said. “The plans were well thought out and executed.”

Shipley and Lozano also won the lone doubles match for the Spartans with an 8-5 decision at No. 1.
