NASS Crop Progress: Corn, soybean progress well ahead of last year

There were 5 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending Aug. 31. Statewide, temperatures averaged 80 degrees, which is 4.4 degrees above normal. Rain averaged 0.66 inches statewide.
Topsoil moisture supply was rated 5 percent very short, 24 percent short, 59 percent adequate, and 12 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 7 percent very short, 30 percent short, 59 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus.
Corn in the dough stage progressed to 97 percent. Corn dented progressed to 81 percent, up 14 percentage points from last week and 16 percentage points ahead of last year. Corn mature reached 26 percent, 24 percentage points ahead of last year. Corn condition was rated 84 percent good to excellent.
Soybeans setting pods progressed to 91 percent, 14 percentage points ahead of last year. Soybean condition was rated 74 percent good to excellent.
Cotton setting bolls progressed to 97 percent. Cotton bolls opening progressed to 12 percent. Rice headed progressed to 93 percent.
Pasture condition was rated 4 percent very poor, rated 15 percent poor, 42 percent fair, 31 percent good, and 8 percent excellent
