The Lady Spartan softball home opener was moved up a few days, but it still managed to be a successful start to the Southview Park schedule.

With the field at Lexington unplayable due to the heavy rains, the teams brought their scheduled game to Richmond Tuesday, with the Lady Spartans holding on for a 6-5 win.

The victory was Richmond’s second in as many tries in this young softball season while Lexington dropped to 1-5. The Lady Spartans had eight hits, but left eight runners on base.

“We hit the ball well at times, but left to many runners in scoring position,” Richmond coach Staci Maddux said.

Nicole Camp battled through seven innings to earn the victory. The Lady Spartan senior allowed four earned runs on nine hits with three walks and a hit batter. She also registered one strikeout.

Lexington cashed in a lead-off walk in the top of the second inning into the game’s first run with Cori Bear plating the run with a two-out single.

Richmond quickly answered with a run in the home half of the inning as Alexis Thaxton began the frame with a walk. Courtesy runner Randi Huffman went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Camp. Sydney Stigall’s single tied the game at 1-1.

Alex Miller’s home run to over the centerfield fence regained the lead for Lexington in the third inning, but once again Richmond would answer – this time with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
