Jo’s Jottings: ‘Trick or Treat Street,’ state of the schools, a full slate for service clubs

By Jo Ellen Dale

At a regular meeting of the Richmond Kiwanis Club Sept. 9, Patrolman Steve Smithson gave an excellent program on child safety issues. He pointed out the success of “Trick or Treat Street” on Halloween as a means of guaranteeing that no little goblins get into trouble. Thank you, Steve, for this good program.

During the Kiwanis business meeting, there was a discussion of magazines for troops, dictionaries for third-grade students, and a Battle of Albany Story Time for children. It was announced that the Kiwanis Golf Tournament was not quite as successful as last year and that the club will be evaluating the event to determine if adjustments are needed as it is the major fundraiser for the fall.

Tuesday was an unusually busy day for me as I rushed from Kiwanis to the DAR meeting, but had to leave early from there as it was my turn to volunteer at the hospital front desk. Whew!

Wednesday, after my daily walk, I enjoyed breakfast with the Walkers’ Club at Our Place and as always there was much visiting and laughter. That afternoon, I volunteered in the gift shop at Ray County Memorial Hospital. Again, I urge you to come out and browse around as there is new merchandize. A huge garage sale is planned soon with great bargains.

Thursday, I was delighted that my son Chuck came and for once was able to spend the night. We enjoyed dinner at Hometown Pizza. Chuck came earlier and played golf with a friend and client from Higginsville and said that he saw many friends at the club.

Friday, I went to Rotary Club and heard an excellent program on the “State of the Schools” given by Superintendent Mike Aytes. I heard him present this program at Kiwanis club some time ago, but was able to catch more this time. He enumerated some of the needs and the good things and concluded that things are improving. But he stressed the importance of the levy to be voted on again in November. He also passed out fliers that were very helpful.

Saturday, a youth wrestling tournament was held at Shirkey Golf Club with 44 participants. The weather cooperated and it was a perfect day for the event.

Monday, I entertained my old couples’ club with lunch at the Tequila-Jalisco and dessert at my house. As always, we had a wonderful time.
