Spartans upset No. 3 seed

By Russ Green-Sports Editor

After sputtering most of the season, the Spartan bats came to life just in time Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the Class 3, District 15 tournament at Lions Park in Lexington.

Richmond, the No. 6 seed, scored 4 runs in the top of the seventh inning to upset the No. 3 seeded Higginsville Huskers 5-2. It was the Spartans first win over their MRVC East foe in three tries as they improve to 4-20, while ending the Huskers’ season at 12-12. Richmond meets second-seeded Lawson in the semifinals tonight at 6:30.

Once again, Shane Battagler kept the Higginsville bats quiet as the Spartan senior pitched six solid innings with Reid Summers making his first appearance after returning from an injury to earn the save.
