The team portion of the 2014 tennis season came to an end Wednesday afternoon for the Richmond Spartans after they were stopped 0-5 by Higginsville in the Class 1, District 14 tournament at Excelsior Springs.

It was the third time this season the No. 2 seeded Huskers threw a shutout against Richmond, but Spartan coach Julie Baker thought her team played well.

“The scores are better than the other two times and the points were definitely better,” she said. “We are out of team play, but we should be happy with the improvement.”

The Spartans dropped all five singles matches and were trailing in two doubles matches. No. 1 Chad Truby fell to Kyle Taylor 0-6, 1-6; and No. 2 Collin Williamson lost to Matt Gibson 4-6. 3-6. Chase Shipley dropped a 2-6, 4-6 decision at No. 3 to Elijah Rhoad, followed by Austin Crossland losing to Kyle Holcomb 1-6, 5-7 at No. 4. Hank Beam clinched the win at No. 5 singles when he defeated Ryan Sander by 6-0, 6-0 scores.
