Richmond golfers looking to extend conference streak

By Russ Green-Sports Editor

With lots of experience coming back for the 2014 season – including three sectional qualifiers and a state qualifier – Spartan golf coach Murray Dennis has his team aiming for its sixth consecutive MRVC East golf championship.

The Spartans swept all 8 league matches and lost just one of 14 overall last season, but even with the experience returning, Dennis knows there is plenty of hard work ahead.

“I really feel like we have a great shot at winning both the regular season and tournament titles,” he said. “But we can’t take anything for granted, so we’ll have to make sure we’re getting better each and every day.”

In addition to running their MRVC East winning streak to 40 consecutive matches, the Spartans also added their fourth MRVC Tournament title to their list of accomplishments to go along with fourth-place showing at the Class 2, District 8 tournament.

Two seniors, a junior and a sophomore are back on the course from that squad.

Zach Frederick, who was the MRVC individual medalists, also placed third in district and advanced to the sectional tournament.

Reece Milligan was a fourth-place finisher in the conference tournament and also qualified for sectionals with his 10th-place finish at districts.

Junior Philip Kincaid capped a solid season by becoming the lone state golfer for the Spartans last spring.
