Part of Highway 210 on fast track for 4-lane expansion

A promise of more jobs is fast tracking a stalled construction project to expand part of Highway 210.

Shelly Daniel, MoDOT area engineer, said final plans to expand 291 to four lanes from I-435 to Highway 210 will be completed Nov. 1. Construction is set for Fall 2015, but Daniels and MoDOT would like the project to begin next year.

“If Kansas City accelerates its money (to the project), it could start next year,” Daniel said of Kansas City’s $3 million commitment to the $12.3 million project.

The highway, built in 1973, will have a grass median to separate east and westbound traffic, requiring construction of a companion bridge, she said. MoDOT anticipates daily traffic count on the highway to nearly double in 20 years – from 16,600 vehicles a day to 33,000.

New momentum for the road expansion was prompted by Ford Motor Company’s announcement of adding 1,600 employees for a new stamping plant that’ll soon create parts for the Ford Transit van – that along with adding a third shift to its
F-150 line to keep up with demand. Transit van production is scheduled to begin the first part of 2014.
