Lady Spartans lose heartbreaker to No. 2 Cameron

The Richmond Lady Spartans run through the Class 3, District 15 tournament at Chillicothe ended Thursday. Although they entered the tournament as the No. 6 seed, Richmond got past Lawson in the first round before dropping a heart breaker to the No. 2-seeded Cameron Lady Dragons, 3-0.

The Lady Spartans end the 2013 campaign with an 11-12 record, but also own a co-championship of the MRVC East title with Higginsville.

“Our season was a big success and I’m very proud of the way the girls pulled together as a team,” Richmond coach Staci Maddux said. “We accomplished some goals that we had set and made great strides toward the future. They should feel very proud of their accomplishments and with hard work there are great things to come for the RHS softball program.”

The Richmond bats were silenced in the semifinals at Danner Park by Cameron’s Ashley Willis. Willis did not allow a hit in her 7 innings and struck out a dozen Lady Spartans with just one walk allowed. Willis worked her way around 3 Cameron errors in the second inning as the Lady Spartans left the bases loaded.

Richmond junior Nicole Camp pitched well in defeat. She scattered 5 hits and allowed 5 walks, but allowed only 2 earned runs while leaving a half-dozen Cameron runners on base.
