Lady Spartan golfers off to a good start in ‘13

By Russ Green-Sports Editor

Three members of the Lady Spartan golf team shot in the 40s Wednesday afternoon to sweep a quad match at Shirkey Golf Course to help Richmond improve to 8-1 overall and also remain unbeaten in three MRVC matches.

The Lady Spartans shot 190 with Odessa finishing a distant second with a 218. Grain Valley followed with a 228 and Plattsburg shot 258. The victories over Grain Valley and Odessa were league matches.

Breann Mathis led the way for Richmond to finish as the medalist with a 45 on the par-38 Shirkey course. Becca Westbrook was one shot back to place as the runner-up, while Maddy Zeller carded a 48 for her round. Richmond coach Murray Dennis said the girls were a bit more relaxed.

“I thought our girls played extremely well today,” he said. “They went out relaxed and it paid off as they played today. This is the first time we have had three girls shoot in the 40s at home and I was extremely proud of them for that.”

Makenzi Turley ended her day with a 51 and Brooke Ross shot a 52 to round out the Richmond scoring.

Kaylee Hutchens had the low Grain Valley round with 49, Kylee Snyder shot a 51 for Odessa and Emily Zahn had a 56 for the low Plattsburg score.

Dennis also said his junior varsity continues to show improvement. The Lady Spartans shot 235 to defeat Odessa and Grain Valley. Both of those schools shot 252.
