Track squads test new facilities at Joe Shy Relays

The Richmond track teams helped unveil the new facilities at Chillicothe High School Friday afternoon at the annual Joe Shy Relays. The meet was the first held on the track at the new Jerry Litton Memorial Stadium.

The host Lady Hornets celebrated by winning the girls’ team title with 117.5 points, which was 10.5 points ahead of runner-up Maryville. The two schools switched places in the boys’ standings with Maryville picking up 123 points, while Chillicothe finished with 110 in the 16-team field.

The Spartans placed ninth with 32.5 points, and the Lady Spartans ended the afternoon with 22 points, which was good for 11th.

Richmond junior Matt Tweedie had another good meet for the Spartans. Tweedie captured third place in the 1,600-meter run and was also a part of the winning 4 x 800 relay team. Tweedie finished the 1,600 with a time of 5 minutes, 2.16 seconds. St. Joseph Benton’s Kain Ellis turned in the top time of 4:49.99, with Robbie Lock of Carrollton grabbing second spot in 4:59.76.

The 4 x 800 squad of Tweedie, Daymean Probst, Dakota Boss and Ethan Turner broke the tape in 8:56.49, with Chillicothe placing right behind with a time of 9:03.56.

Richmond picked up points in two other relay events.
