RHS nails down fifth straight crown

The Richmond Spartans added another regular-season MRVC East golf title to go along with the conference tournament championship with a win over Knob Noster Monday afternoon.

Richmond improved to 7-0 in league meetings and 11-1 overall following the win over the Panthers and Grain Valley in a triangular held at Shirkey Golf Course. The Spartans shot a 176 to edge Grain Valley by four shots, with Knob Noster ending the afternoon with a 219.

It was the fifth straight league crown for the Spartans and coach Murray Dennis likes the way his team is shaping up as the district tournament gets set to tee off Monday at Shirkey.

“The guys are beginning to get more consistent, but also recognize things that cause them problems and really want to work on those before districts,” he said. “We still have other goals we’re striving for and I know the guys will do what they can to help us achieve those goals.”

Reece Milligan led the way for Richmond as he earned medalist honors for the day by carding a 4-over-par 40, with Philip Kincaid just one shot off the pace. Zach Frederick followed with a 43, while Davis Johnson shot a 52. Justin Persell also shot a 52 in his first match following shoulder surgery. Dennis feels confident in how his team has played the last couple of weeks.
