Extra-inning blast stuns Richmond

By Russ Green-Sports Editor

Luke Wozny’s home run in the bottom of the 11th ended a frustrating and long Tuesday afternoon for the Richmond Spartans at Carrollton. Wozny’s shot to right field gave the Trojans a 10-9 win over the Spartans and also ended a five-game losing streak to Richmond.

It was Carrollton’s first MRVC East win in four games, while the Spartans fell to 2-1 in league and 2-5 overall.

A 6-run outburst in the home half of the sixth inning helped Carrollton erase a 6-3 Richmond lead. The Spartans grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first, but Carrollton put 3 runs on the board in the bottom of the second frame.

The Spartans tied the game in the fourth after Dakota Hayward led off with a single and scored on Jimmy Hamm’s double. Reid Summers followed and reached on an error ahead of a ground out by Matt Stafford and a single by Kaleb Heber.

Andrew Nolker’s home run highlighted a 3-run sixth inning for the Spartans to give the visitors a 6-3 lead. However, the Trojans quickly bounced back in the home half of the frame.
