Records fall for Richmond in Hamilton opener

By Russ Green-Sports Editor

The Richmond Spartans shook off a tough MRVC East road loss to Higginsville with a convincing 69-38 victory over the hosts in the opening round of the Hamilton Invitational Monday night. The top-seeded Spartans, now 11-5, rode the shooting touch of Reid Summers, who also bounced back from a tough outing at Higginsville.

Summers knocked down nine 3-point buckets to tie an RHS record and also set a new tournament mark for treys in a game on his way to chalking up a game-high 34 points. The Spartan junior now shares the school mark for 3’s with Blaine Broderick. Summers needs just four more buckets outside the arc this week to set another tournament standard.

Monday night’s meeting between the Hornets and Spartans was a rarity. The two schools have battled for the tournament championship the past four years. The teams have split the previous four, with Richmond winning last year’s final, 48-33.
