Dennis and Rebecca Matthews, parents of a 3-week-old daughter who died in August 2012, appeared in court Wednesday represented by different attorneys.

Dennis Matthews, 25, and Rebecca Matthews, 24, are each charged with a single A Felony charge of Abuse of a Child – Resulting in Death. If convicted, they each face imprisonment ranging from 10 years to life.

The defendants deny that abuse led to their daughter’s death.

On Wednesday, Judge David Miller granted the mother’s public defender, attorney Janeal Matheson a two-month continuance to assemble her case.

“I realize this takes some time and there’s no point calling her up here (earlier),” Miller said. “If something were worked out sooner, there’s no problem calling it back.”

Rebecca Matthews will return to court at 8:30 a.m. March 6.

Like her husband, Rebecca Matthews is in custody at Ray County Jail. Each is being held on a $500,000 cash bond with no 10-percent payment option to gain a release.

Matheson asked Miller if her client could receive some drawings her two children made for her. The children are in the custody of the Division of Family Services, reportedly living with a relative.

The children were ages 4 and 2 when their parents were arrested.

Miller said he would discuss the issue privately with Matheson and a representative of DFS, which would have to approve the request.
