Lady Bearcats fall behind early

The Orrick Lady Bearcats could not recover from a big early deficit Tuesday night as they dropped their second game in as many nights to begin the new basketball season. Lawson jumped out to a 21-5 lead after the first 8 minutes as the Lady Cardinals opened up the year with a 58-25 win over visiting Orrick Tuesday.

Orrick dropped its opener Monday at Lathrop 54-30.

The Lady Bearcats shot 37 percent Tuesday night and committed 28 turnovers against Lawson’s pressure defense. Janee Kassanavoid was one of three Lawson players to reach double figures with a game-high 14 points. Keely Simmons added 13 and Kerstin Huffman hit for 12.

Madison Winters led the Orrick scoring with 11 points and Sam Fulte added 8. Amery Well, Sydnee McGlothlin and Madison Endsley scored 2 apiece. McGlothlin grabbed 5 rebounds for the Lady Bearcats.

After building its big first-quarter lead, Lawson took a 35-13 advantage into the intermission and held a 48-23 cushion going into the final frame.
