Excelsior man dies in wreck in attempt to avoid deer

An Excelsior Springs man died Thursday night on Route JJ, 1 mile south of Route H in Clay County.

David S. Schoetter, 54, was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:02 p.m. by Excelsior Springs EMS medic Zachary St. John, according to the Highway Patrol crash report.

Schoetter was driving southbound on Route JJ when he swerved to avoid hitting a deer. His 1991 Mercury Cougar went off the right side of the road, striking the ditch several times and eventually ejecting Schoetter from the car.
