After 35 years, Williams retiring from Apple Market

Johnnie Williams, produce manager for Richmond Apple Market, is retiring after 35 years with grocery store co-owner Bob MacDonald. Williams said it was the customers and co-workers that made his job so enjoyable. A reception for him will be tonight (Sept. 27) at 6 p.m. at Hometown Pizza.

A familiar face is leaving Richmond soon.

Richmond Apple Market produce manager Johnnie Williams is retiring from a store he has called home for 35 years. His last day on the job is Saturday.

Williams joined grocery store co-owner Bob MacDonald 35 years ago at Bob’s United Super, which now houses Jeffrey Kyle’s. The store moved to its current location as a Piggly Wiggly, an IGA and finally Apple Market. Williams started in the grocery business at Jim Johnston’s at age 17.

“A great employee. Never missed a day of work unless he was truly sick, always on time. I’d like to have 10 of him,” MacDonald said of Williams. “He’s always customer friendly.”

Customers coming into the store Wednesday stopped to banter with Williams during the interview. “Hey John, I got my flu shot today and I didn’t cry,” one guy joked. Williams laughs and later says, “It’s so nice to know them on a first-name basis. They’re more than customers, they’re family. It’s the kind of job you look forward to work every day.”
