Spartans’ Gorham takes first in Oak Grove Cross Country meet

Richmond senior Cody Gorham got the 2011 cross country season off on the right foot Thursday when he took first place at the Oak Grove Invitational held at Frick Park. Gorham’s finish helped pace the Spartans to a third-place finish in the nine-team event.

Gorham ran the 5K course in 17 minutes, 7 seconds, followed by three Smithville runners, led by runner-up Colton Reid with a time of 17:49. Smithville won the team title with 29 points. Platte County placed a distant second with 77 points, and the Spartans ended the afternoon with 90 points.

Justin Persell was the only other Richmond runner to place in the top 20, with his 17th-place time of 18:53. Luke Bailey was 21st with 19:28, followed by Matt Tweedie with 19:44 (27th); Cody Horton with 20:46 (40th); Daniel Dehn with 20:56 (42nd); and Jesse Bulk with 23:11 (57th).

Roy Branson had the top finish for the Richmond junior varsity. The Spartan sophomore ran the 2-mile course in 12:28 to place 10th. Ethan Turner was 23rd for Richmond with a time of 13:15, followed by Jackson Pence with 13:56 (41st); Lucas Jones with 15:53 (62nd) and Wesley Sander with 17:52 (69th).

Savanna Nobile was the lone Lady Spartan runner in the varsity race. Nobile placed 40th with a time of 26:18. Richmond had three other runners in the JV event. Rian Souders placed 26th with 16:15, followed by Kiah Cline with a 31st-place time of 16:49 and Justin Gordon, who took 47th with 21:39.
