Rattlers strike gold at Show-Me games

A little bit of hard work in very warm weather paid off for 13 area youngsters and their coaches last weekend in Columbia. The Rattlers pulled off what is believed to be the first team gold medal earned for a Richmond squad at the Show-Me State Games as they took first place in the Coach Pitch Group 3, 8-and-younger division.
The Rattlers won all four games and capped the weekend with a 12-10 victory over a Wentzville X-treme team that entered the championship game with a 17-1 record.

Coach Joey Duncan said his team put a lot of effort into earning the gold medal.

“They practiced just about every day for three weeks in the heat and it paid off for us down there,” he said. “We were hoping to go down there and compete and be able to advance to the finals on Sunday. The look on their faces when they realized they had won the tournament was priceless.”

The Rattlers scored 4 runs in their final at-bat in the championship game with 3 of those coming home on a home run by Lance Rogers. Seven other Rattlers drove in at least one run in the final. Layne Cavanah and Ben Dana plated 2 runs apiece, with Trey Duncan, Jack Gogue, Spencer Wolf, Wyatt Marshall and Timmy Hamilton all driving in one each. The Rattlers collected 19 hits and the defense turned in one double play.
