New coach seeks reversal of volleyball fortunes

New Richmond volleyball coach Rachael Begemann has heard the talk of how much the Lady Spartan volleyball program has struggled over the years. The lone winning season came in 2007 (5-4 in conference and 13-12-3 overall), but Richmond has won just two of its last 30 MRVC East matches and 10 matches overall during that span.
However, she is confident things will begin to turn around. “Tradition Starts Today” is the motto as the Lady Spartans begin the season under Begemann.
“We don’t talk about the past,” she said. “We’re looking ahead.”
Begemann comes to Richmond after previously serving as head coach at Paseo in Kansas City and an assistant at Raytown. She has been in Nevada, Mo. the past three years.
Gaining the trust and confidence of her players will be her first task.
“My biggest task is to get them to have confidence in me and trust that whatever I’m doing is something that is going to make them better,” she said. “I personally want them to succeed. I haven’t had a losing season yet, and I don’t plan on this one being any different. Everything I am doing for the player is giving them the skills to actually win.”
Begemann, who will also be teaching eighth-grade social studies, has been a part of a volleyball program that has turned things around as a player. In her senior season at William Jewell College, the Lady Cardinals erased 21 years of frustration with their first conference title and a trip to the national regionals. William Jewell is where she met her husband Brad, who will also be at Richmond this fall as an assistant football coach. Both Begemanns still own Jewell records in track, with Rachael holding the school mark in the javelin.
