Netters tune up for conference with shutout

The Lady Spartan tennis team built some momentum heading into Saturday’s MRVC tennis tournament with a 9-0 shutout at Knob Noster Thursday afternoon. The win also boosted Richmond over .500 overall at 7-6 and brought the Lady Spartans to a game of the break-even mark in league at 3-4.
Richmond Coach Zach Danner is excited to see how his team has bonded the past few weeks.
“It’s great to have a team that pulls together and supports each other,” he said. “In an effort like tonight it takes a team that works together. I’m very happy to be back over .500 overall and tonight’s match is a great one to lead us into the conference tournament on Saturday.”
In singles results: No. 1 Brittany Munson defeated Ashley Kjos 8-2; No. 2 Hanna Jones defeated Sophia Crawshaw 8-2; No. 3 Kaylie Root defeated Micaela Fisk 8-3; No. 4 Hannah Hillegas defeated Dana Pindilli 8-1; No. 5 Lissa Long defeated Aubrey Wallace 8-5; No. 6 Ariel Hoard defeated Megan Jungnitsch 8-6.
In doubles: No. 1 Munson/Jones defeated Kjos/Pindilli 8-3; No. 2 Root/Hoard defeated Crawshaw/Fisk 9-7; No. 3 Hillegas/Long defeated Wallace/Jungnitsch 8-1.
Danner was also pleased with the effort of the junior varsity team that captured seven of the nine matches.
“Each of the girls contributed to the win and have worked very hard to make us a competitive team,” he said. “Coach Goodall has done a great job getting the girls ready.”
Richmond won five of the six singles matches. Winners for the Lady Spartan JV were Morgan McCaughey, 6-0; Brielle Herrero, 6-3; Anna Munson, 6-0; Kimber Briant, 6-2; Kelsey Knutter, 6-4. Munson/Herrero picked up the lone doubles victory for Richmond with a 9-7 decision in the tiebreaker.
