Early lead not enough for Lady Spartans in first road test

Richmond scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning Thursday at Higginsville, but could not manage any more offensive production as the Lady Spartans dropped a 6-2 MRVC East contest. The loss drops Richmond to 0-3 for the season and 0-2 against the league.
The Lady Spartans took advantage of a leadoff single by Ashley Williams in the first frame and then stole second. Kayla Hewitt reached base ahead of a run-scoring single from Stephanie Williams.
With one out, Alex Phillips grounded out to first, but pushed Hewitt home with the second Richmond run in the inning. That would be all the damage the visitors could do against Higginsville starter Karley Alumbaugh.
The Lady Husker pitcher would retire the 10 Richmond hitters in a row following Williams’ RBI single to help Higginsville win its first game of the season in three outings.
Phillips ended the streak with a one-out double in the fourth, but was stranded there. Phillips also reached on an error to begin the top of the seventh, and Haley Padgett followed with a walk, but once again Alumbaugh retired the final three Richmond batters without further damage.
The Lady Huskers, now 1-1 in the conference, tied the game in the second frame on a pair of walks and two singles before grabbing the lead for good with 3 more runs the following inning. The final Higginsville run came home in the fifth.
In addition to her pitching, Alumbaugh collected 3 hits with an RBI.
Kristie Spiers scattered 8 hits for the Lady Spartans, with 4 walks while striking out 5. Half of the 6 runs were unearned.
Higginsville also won the junior varsity game, 6-2.
Leslyn Cole had 2 of the 5 Richmond hits, while Brett Goligoski drove in 2 runs with a fourth-inning single.
