New Sonic open for business

It’s been a facelift, months in the making, for America’s Favorite Drive-In.
Wednesday morning, the new Sonic location at the intersection of Spartan Drive and West Main Street opened for business around 11 a.m., a little later than Sonic’s typical opening time.
Meanwhile, co-owner Liz Simons said the future of the old location, several blocks down West Main Street from the current one, is up in the air. The original location closed on Monday.
Simons suggested she might set up some special events in the future to commemorate the occasion.
“There will possibly be some things down the road,” Simons said. “We kind of like to get open and get everything running smoothly, so you’ll just have to be watching for that.”
Simons said the new location is an adjustment to changing times – and Richmond’s changing layout.
“The store was built in 1978, I believe, when highways 10 and 13 went by that location,” Simons said. “So obviously, with the changes in traffic patterns, it took the Sonic off the beaten path.”
She said the store’s biggest advantage is having a little “more” in the right areas: more parking spaces, more patio room – and a drive-thru, for when there’s just no time to stop.
