Rite of summer: Richmond bands prepare for camps

Three summer band camps are planned for the month of July by new Richmond Director of Bands Jeff Clymore.
The Richmond Middle School Band will meet July 6, 7, 9, 13 and 14 from 9 a.m. to noon for a class on basic composing and arranging music utilizing Finale Notepad Software. Students will learn to arrange a simple song for other instruments and create an original song 24 measures in length.
From 2 to 5 p.m. on the above listed dates, the full band will meet for rehearsal. After five three-hour rehearsals, the band will present a concert for the parents in the RMS band room at 5:30 p.m. July 14.
The Richmond High School Marching Spartan Band will hit the practice field on July 27–28, 30, Aug 3-4 from 9 a.m. to noon, and Aug. 6 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
This camp is mandatory for all high school marching band students. Clymore encourages parents and students to make arrangements with work, vacation and ride schedules in advance to ensure the full band will be ready for an action-packed marching season.
The community and band parents are invited to attend a ‘Meet the Band’ and new band director at a debut performance at the practice football field, Aug. 6 at 7 p.m.
While the full band is on the field in the mornings, an Auxiliary Camp is planned during the afternoon of the above listed dates for the high school band camp. Auxiliary is a term used to define the percussion, or drumline as it is known during marching season, and colorguard, also known as flags.
Drumline and Colorguard will rehearse from noon to 2 p.m., after the full high school band rehearsal.
The RHS Marching Spartan Band will present its first home game halftime show on Aug. 28 when Richmond plays Lawson.
The band will be competing at three marching festivals in the state this fall.
The 2009 tentative Fall Performance Schedule is:
Aug. 28 – Home game (Richmond vs. Lawson)
Sept 11 – Home game (RHS vs. Savanna)
Sept. 19 – MU Band Day at Columbia
