Professional woodwind recital and class at Farris Thursday

Hal and Lynn Fryer will present two special programs at the Farris Theatre on Thursday, Nov. 20. A special master class will be held from 3 to 4 p.m., and a recital will commence at 7 p.m.
The Fryers are retired from The United States Navy Band in Washington, D.C. Hal served as the baritone saxophonist and bass clarinetist with the Navy’s premier jazz ensemble, the “Commodores.” Lynn was a clarinetist and Operations Chief with the Navy Band. She has appeared as a soloist and clinician throughout the United States and Austria.
Lynn (Seward) Fryer is the daughter of the late Ken and Nancy Seward, former directors of the Richmond High School Band. Under their leadership and exceptional musical standards, the Richmond band rose to an excellence not seen since in marching, concert and solo and ensemble competition. Lynn graduated from Richmond High School in 1979. Her brother, Steve, has been the principal tuba in the Kansas City Symphony for over 25 years.
Hal and Lynn live in Leesburg, Fla., where they teach music at Central Florida Community College in Ocala. They are active in the community as performers in many musical groups.
Band members and their families throughout the area are encouraged to attend this recital, listen to a Richmond band alumnus perform and enjoy a musical learning experience. The Ray County Community Arts Association is proud to sponsor this event. RCCAA board member Stephanie Landwehr emphasizes such an opportunity should not be missed.
“It’s wonderful that a hometown girl that has gone out and made the most of her talent wants to come back and perform for the community and bring two talented musicians with her,” Landwehr said. “ And it’s wonderful that we have an organization like RCCAA that will support and bring artists to the community.”
Selections will include the music of Johannes Brahms, Dizzy Gillespie, Felix Mendelssohn, Giuseppe Verdi and John Williams and others. Instruments featured will be the clarinet, bass clarinet and alto saxophone.
