Martens tosses second RHS gem

The Richmond Lady Spartans recorded their second no-hitter of the season Monday night. Whitney Martens tossed the gem for Richmond in the Lady Spartans’ 11-0 victory at Cameron and joins Hayley Clubine in the no-hitter club.
“Whitney did an outstanding job on the mound,” Richmond Coach Staci Maddux said. “She had their hitters overpowered for most of the game.”
The Lady Spartan senior faced 17 batters and began the game with five strikeouts before issuing a two-out walk in the second inning. Martens allowed just one more Cameron base runner when she hit a batter to lead off the fourth, and ended the game with 10 strikeouts.
While Martens was shutting down the Dragon bats, the Richmond offense collected 13 hits as the Lady Spartans improve to 12-5 for the season. Once again, the top of the lineup was productive as Hannah Alpers, Megan Phipps, Stephanie Williams and Baylyn Jennings had 2 hits apiece and drove in 2 runs each.
While pleased with her offensive production, Maddux said her team could still improve.
“I would like to see us more patient and disciplined at the plate against a pitcher with less speed than we are used to,” she said.
Richmond scored a run in the top of the first and added 2 more in the second on a triple from Hayley Padgett to go along with an Alpers double and single from Phipps. The Lady Spartans put the game away in the fifth as they scored 8 runs after the first two batters of the inning were retired. Jennings added a run-scoring triple, with Richmond also getting singles from Kayla Hewitt, Chelsea Hook, Martens and Alpers.
The Lady Spartans were also helped by a pair of Cameron errors in that inning.
The Richmond junior varsity also continued its fine play during the past two weeks. The Lady Spartans took a 7-3 victory for their third win in a row. Richmond had 7 hits in the 5-inning contest to back the pitching of Kristie Spiers who allowed 5 hits and 4 walks while striking out 8 Cameron batters.
Alex Phillips drove in 3 runs for Richmond, with Adrian Tackett driving in a pair of runs. Evyn Pearson and Hook also drove in a run for the Lady Spartans. Hook also led the team with 2 hits, while Richmond got a hit apiece from Phillips, Tackett, Pearson, Hayley Bently and Padgett.
