Softball race tied at the top

It wasn’t their best offensive output of the season, but Richmond had just enough to get past visiting Carrollton with a 4-2 victory, Thursday afternoon. The victory also pulled the Lady Spartans into a tie with Lady Trojans atop the MRVC East standings with a 6-1 mark.
Both teams are also 10-4 overall.
Carrollton jumped to an early 2-0 lead with an unearned run in the top of the first. However, Richmond quickly countered with a pair of runs in the home half to tie the game.
“We had a shaky first inning, but the girls settled down and played great defense,” Lady Spartan Coach Staci Maddux said. “I’m very proud of the way the girls are playing together right now.”
Hayley Clubine did not allow a run for the remainder of the game. After a leadoff single in the second inning, the Richmond senior retired the next 11 Carrollton batters. Clubine earned the victory with a complete-game effort. She scattered 5 hits with a pair of walks and 2 strikeouts.
Richmond took advantage of a Carrollton error in the bottom of the first, as Stephanie Williams drove in a pair of runs with single to tie the contest. The Lady Spartans jumped on top in the third as Clubine reached on a one-out single, and came home when Baylyn Jennings followed with a double. Megan Phipps led off the fifth inning with a single and scored the final run of the game as Clubine was hit by a pitch, followed by Jennings and Williams both reaching on a fielder’s choice.
Regan Mathis led the Carrollton batters with 2 hits.
Richmond will host a three-team tournament Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. Excelsior Springs and St. Joseph Lafayette will also be competing.
