RICHMOND – Allie Clubine Castilleja gave her dad an early birthday present: her induction into the Richmond High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
Clubine Castilleja, a 2005 graduate and standout prep softball player, was inducted June 4 during the annual Hall of Fame banquet and ceremony in the high school commons area. The honor took place one day before the birthday of Mike Clubine, her father, she told the crowd.
He turned 65, she said during a post-ceremony interview. “This induction is probably the best gift that he will ever get,” an emotionally moved Clubine Castilleja told audience members.
It was Clubine that molded Clubine Castilleja into what varsity coach Staci Maddux called “the most profound pitcher that the Richmond softball program has ever had.” The time he spent catching for Clubine Castilleja and her sisters as they practiced while he sat on a bucket – called “bucket time” – likely “surpassed anybody in the nation,” Maddux humorously estimated.
