Future Spartans learn football skills at youth gridiron camp

RICHMOND – Last week, Spartans varsity football coach Nick Persell got a look at some of the athletes who might be in his program in a few years. Persell led the Future Spartan Football Camp for grades K-6, held May 31-June 2. He estimated 80-plus youngsters attended the first day. Typically, 100-plus attend, he said. The threat of heavy rain, which forced camp to go indoors at Richmond Middle School, had some effect on the opening turnout, Persell said May 31. He and his staff “made it work” inside, he said. “It was a good day … – a lot of kids showed up and got a lot of good work in,” Persell commented. Day 2 was slated for outdoors at the practice field. The final day was at Spartan Stadium, where the campers ran through what Persell called “the tunnel” – a large, inflatable helmet the varsity Spartans run through to take the field for their home games. They also played some 15-minute, two-hand touch football games. Persell estimated the turnout to be around 90 by camp’s end…
