New experience for young Spartan gridders

A young group of Richmond Spartan football players traveled to Columbia two weeks ago to play in the Show-Me State Games. The Spartans played in the 13 and younger division and won one of their three games, but gained valuable experience as they get ready to advance to the junior high level this fall.
The team, coached by Wes Maxwell, Terry Dickey, Royce Duffett, Shea Pugh and Matt Jones, spent six weeks preparing for the tournament.

“The purpose of taking next year’s junior high football team, or at least those who wanted to be a part of this experience, was to help them get out of the Little League mentality of playing against each other and learn to play as one with and for each other before they get to the eighth-grade level,” Maxwell said. “It was a success. All 19 boys gave their best effort.”

The Spartans began the tournament against O’Fallon, Ill., Midwest Tigers. Maxwell said Richmond moved the ball on offense, but was unable to find the end zone. That changed with the second game as the Spartans defeated the Columbia Colts by three touchdowns, while the defense pitched a shutout.
