Orrick taxes to increase

Barring last-minute objections on Aug. 5, Orrick citizens will pay slightly higher property taxes over the coming year.

Citizens raised practically no objections Tuesday to the Board of Aldermen first reading of adding 30 cents per $100 assessed valuation for the 2011 tax year. In 2010, residents paid 65 cents per $100; they'll pay 95 cents in 2011 if the board approves the measure next month.

In 2009, the tax rate decreased by 20 cents per $100 when the city paid off a 15-year bond that paid for repairs to flood-damaged roads. Adding 30 cents to the rate would make it only 10 cents higher than that year's rate, council members say.

Alderwoman Cindy Lampton said that's revenue the city still needs.

"It's only $20,000 but for a town this small, that's a lot of money," Lampton said.

City Clerk Tricia Wartenbee said she thought the city hadn't had a tax increase in nearly 30 years.

Before Tuesday's tax hearing, the board appointed Ray Dinwiddie as the city's new police chief.
