On March 11, more than 6,000 tons of fertilizer began moving up the Missouri River to farms and retail locations in Central Missouri, Missouri Department of Transportation reported.

The shipment was carried by four barges pushed by the M/V Butch Bowman, a 2,400-horsepower shallow draft boat that is suited to Missouri River navigation.

The load was expected to arrive at AGRIServices of Brunswick on Sunday, March 14. It has significance for the Missouri Department of Transportation, which is promoting an expansion of barge traffic on the river.

“Drought and low water levels the past eight years almost sunk Missouri River cargo shipping, but there’s a rejuvenated focus to bring river traffic back,” MoDOT spokesman Jorma Duran said. “The Missouri Department of Transportation, along with agriculture and shipping partners, wants renewed life on the Missouri River and has formed a unique partnership to increase freight shipping, create jobs and promote an environmentally friendlier way to transport goods.”

AGRIServices, the shipment destination, is the leading mid-Missouri port for fertilizer shipments, some of which supply Ray County farmers.
