A Roy Blunt-Robin Carnahan matchup in November for the Senate seat currently held by Kit Bond is a foregone conclusion in Missouri political circles.

But it ignores August primaries in which Democratic and Republican candidates first must face off. Filing for those primaries continues through March 30.

As of Friday, Carnahan’s sole Democratic opponent was Francis Vangeli of Columbia. The Republican ticket, however, contained no fewer than nine names, including Blunt’s.

Blunt, Congressman in the 7th District, in August will face R.L. Praprotnik, St. Louis; James H. Schmidt, St. Charles; Hector Maldonado, Sullivan; Kristi Nichols, Kansas City; Deborah Solomon, Independence; Davis Conway, St. Peters; Mike Vontz, Lake St. Louis, and Church Purgason, Caulfield.

Jonathan Dine, of Riverside, is the sole Libertarian candidate. Joe Martellaro, Cuba, and Jerry Beck, La Monte, of the Constitution Party rounded out the current slate as of Friday.
