Following a 30-minute campaign visit to Richmond on Friday, U.S. Senate candidate Roy Blunt continued on a 19-city political caravan with the theme “Jobs for Missouri’s Future.”

Blunt, a seven-term Republican congressman, told a group of around 20 supporters at Jeffrey Kyle’s Family Grill & Buffet, 908 East Main St., that jobs will only be created if business people feel secure enough to invest their money.

“We understand risk and reward,” said Blunt, who is seeking the seat currently occupied by Republican Kit Bond, who is retiring. “You’re only going to put money on the table if you think there’ll be something there for you and your family at the end of the day.”

Blunt’s opponent in November will be Democrat Robin Carnahan, Missouri’s current secretary of state and the daughter of the late governor Mel Carnahan.

Labeling himself a supporter of developing “American energy of any kind,” Blunt took exception to Cap and Trade, a President Obama-supported plan to impose penalties on industries that exceed limits on greenhouse gas emissions.

“They’re still on that Cap and Trade bandwagon,” he said. “People understand that this in essence is a plan to double your utility bills. The Robin Carnahan side of this campaign will want it to be about little things. They won’t want it to be about Cap and Trade or anything like that.”
