One Mohler family member awaiting trial posted bond yesterday, while another learned his arraignment date.
David A. Mohler, 52, Lamoni, Iowa posted his $70,000 cash-only bond by 4 p.m. Wednesday, according to Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department officer Dave Hanaway. Meanwhile, David’s brother Jared L. Mohler, 48, Columbia, motioned to skip his preliminary hearing and move directly to a Jan. 4 arraignment on various felony rape, sodomy and sexual abuse charges worth up to 89 years imprisonment.
David, currently held in Lafayette County on a $50,000 cash-only bond, will appear later Thursday afternoon to address his own future preliminary hearing. His father Burrell E. Mohler Sr., 77, Independence, will also appear in court, along with David’s brothers Roland N. Mohler, 47, Bates City; and Burrell E. Mohler Jr., 53, Independence. Mohler Sr.’s brother Darrell Mohler, 72, Silver Springs, Fla., faces two rape charges in Lafayette County related to the case, but does not have an announced court date.
The six men combined face 31 felony sex crime charges, stemming from allegations they raped, sodomized and sexually molested Mohler Jr.’s five daughters and one son between the ages of 6- and about 12-years old during the years 1986-1991. Evidence has also surfaced suggesting some family members kidnapped and raped at least one victim outside the family.
Victim statements have described one man’s 1988 murder by Mohler Jr. at Mohler Sr.’s former Bates City residence at 3607 Old Concord Road. The victim described being forced by Mohler Jr. to assist in kidnapping from the Independence Center parking lot and killing an unidentified man, under threat Mohler would kill she and her sisters if they didn’t.
Police have uncovered an unidentified human bone buried outdoors on the property.
