Authorities searching Burrell E. Mohler Jr.’s Independence home earlier this month found caches of pornography, video-viewing equipment, homemade video recordings and various Christian media.
Mohler – along with his father, four brothers and his father’s brother – face charges that the six men raped, sodomized and otherwise sexually abused Mohler’s five daughters and one son continuously between 1986 and 1991. At that time, the children were between the ages of six years and around 12 years old.
Items found Nov. 20 by Jackson County Sheriff’s Department detectives at Mohler Jr.’s home at 10007 E. 20th St. included two boxes of VHS tapes found in the attic with boxes of paperwork, blueprints, computer parts and photographs. Authorities also found a Christmas popcorn tin containing more paperwork and photographs.
That same day, detectives recovered various other items from elsewhere in the home. They ranged from an issue of Muscle & Fitness magazine, two bank ledgers and one black address book, to a copy of Penthouse Forum, 56 VHS tapes, two cassette tapes and eight pornographic VHS tapes.
They also confiscated one congregational leader’s handbook, multiple copies of “What Is The Book Of Mormon” binders and one Focus On The Family film series.
During a search of the home’s southeast and southwest bedrooms, authorities found multiple boxes of assorted VHS tapes, along with papers, books and a portable flash-memory storage device. They also found a black trash bag containing papers and clothing, along with a wooden box of jewelry.
There were also knives in a wooden box, a brown wooden box containing various papers, a Kodak slide projector with a carousel of slides, a Kodak disc 3600 camera, multiple storage devices and homemade videotapes and eight various pornographic videos.
Another affidavit details findings of pornographic videos and magazines, including a copy of a “Purely 18” issue and at least one commercial DVD depicting incestuous sex. Once more, authorities found miscellaneous papers, digital storage devices and religious materials among the pornographic materials. That included one copy of “Book of Mormon Stories for Children” in the same area as seven “Letters to Penthouse” paperback books.
A separate Nov. 23 search turned up miscellaneous boxes of books, letters and journals, along with photos, VHS tapes and audio cassettes and an ax.
Mohler Jr., 53, Independence, is scheduled to appear in Lafayette County Court Dec. 3.
