Since Oct. 2008, Fleming Baptist Church in Fleming, has been a food distribution agency for Harvesters in Kansas City.
Pastor Fred Kelly and Janice Haynes, director, at Fleming Baptist Church agree they have seen the number of needy families increase since they became involved with Harvesters.
“On Aug. 5, we served 65 families. On Aug. 19, the weather was a little stormy and we had 42 families come. That’s a total of 107 families and 372 people for the month, and is our record to date,” said Haynes.
Fifty seven families showed up for the distribution from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. yesterday. That amounts to 183 individuals.
Food is free to needy families of Camden, Fleming, Henrietta, Rayville, Orrick and Richmond once a month with proof of address and ID.
Distributions are the first Wednesday of each month, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the third Wednesday of the month from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the church basement.
The church has made flyers that lists the following interesting facts about the agency:
• Harvesters purchases their food at 10 cents per pound, yet their pantry depends upon donations.
• They have distributed nearly 40,000 pounds of food since October 2008 and have assisted 96 families in July and 107 families in Aug.
Volunteers order, pick-up, unload, stock shelves, and distribute the food – and as with most civic groups, volunteers are always needed.
“The boys and girls that have been volunteering this summer are back at school,” Haynes said. “We definitely missed our youth.”
Six volunteers were on hand to help with the distribution.
