Over 50 Ray County citizens gathered Thursday morning at 10 a.m., in the chambers of the Ray County Commission to launch a discount card program to help consumers cope with the high price of prescription drugs. Health care providers, local business representatives, area pastors and other individuals joined in the kick-off.

The Ray County Commission is making free prescription drug discount cards available to persons of all ages under a program sponsored by the National Association of Counties (NACo) that offers average savings of 22 percent off the retail price of commonly prescribed drugs. Each family needs only one card for the entire family.

“Ray County is proud to be one of the counties nationwide participating with NACo.” said Presiding Commissioner Jeff Adams. “The NACo prescription discount card offers significant savings for the uninsured and underinsured residents of our county, whatever their age.. Even those fortunate to have prescription coverage can use the card to save money on drugs that are not covered by their health plan. Residents do not have to be Medicare beneficiaries to be eligible for this program, but persons covered by Medicare may also use the card when Medicare does not pay on their drugs.”

Best of all, there is no cost to county taxpayers for NACo and the Ray County Commissioners to make these money saving cards available to residents. The cards may be used by all county residents, regardless of age, income, or existing health coverage, and are accepted at four county pharmacies: Economy Health Mart, C and C Discount Drugs, Monroe Pharmacy and Walmart Pharmacy. A national network of more than 59,000 participating retail pharmacies also will honor the NACo prescription discount card so Ray County residents may use the cards even when not within Ray County.

Cards are available at several locations throughout the county and will be distributed to even more locations in the coming weeks. Cards are available at: Ray County Commission Office, Ray County Senior Services Board Office, Economy Health Mart, Department of Health and Senior Services, Shirkey Golf Club, Blair’s Furniture, several county public schools, Ray County Memorial Hospital, Orrick Community Center, Missouri Valley Community Action Agency, Henrietta City Hall, Henrietta Baptist Church, Richmond Methodist and United Christian Presbyterian and Assembly of God churches, Salvation Army, Ray County Fellowship Center, Ray County Health Department, and the Shell, Sinclair and BP Stations. County residents can call toll free 1-877-321-2652 or visit www.caremark.com/naco for assistance with the program.

Persons representing other facilities, agencies, and public or private offices at any location in Ray County may call the Ray County Senior Services Board Office between the hours of 12 and 4 p.m. to arrange to receive Drug Discount Cards to distribute to their customers and clients.

“Using the NACo prescription discount card is easy,” said Commissioner Adams. “Simply present it at a participating pharmacy. There is no enrollment form, no membership fee and no restrictions or limits on frequency of use. Cardholders and their family members may use the card any time their prescriptions are not covered by insurance.”

Commissioner Adams went on to say that the Commission and the Ray County Senior Services Board who helped the Commissioners develop and launch this program hope that county residents will benefit. He reminds users that the card is not an insurance card and cannot be used in conjunction with any insurance program.
