Woodrail, Dale meeting may change sewer issue

A few days can change a lot.
On Tuesday, the Richmond Public Works Committee met with Woodrail subdivision residents to discuss fixing the subdivision’s tie-in to Richmond’s sewer system with a goal of ending years of inflated sewer bills. At the time, the committee recommended the subdivision residents retain an attorney.
However, Richmond Mayor Mike Wright said Wednesday that Woodrail residents met informally with Ray County Eastern Commissioner Allen Dale and once more discussed establishing a sewer district or other legal entity to possibly share the burden with property owners.
“When they bought out there, they didn’t know the condition of the sewer system,” Wright said. “I think after talking with Molly McGovern the other day, they’re going to think about it, but forming a sewer district would be a good option, especially if they can get (subdivision property owner) Tammy Williams to join in forming the district.”
The committee informed residents Tuesday that Williams has recently retained an attorney. Williams confirmed Wednesday that she has enlisted Curtis J. Peterson of Kansas City firm Polsinelli Shughart to help negotiate who should address inflow-and-infiltration issues that have inflated Woodrail subdivision homeowners’ sewer bills to over $200 a month.
One resident at Tuesday’s Public Works Committee session told the committee he’s had to cut back his family’s leisure spending so they could afford sewer service.
