Like most of the other area high school teams, the Richmond Spartans participated in a football jamboree Friday night in preparation for the 2014 season that kicks off this week.
Richmond, along with Chillicothe and Grain Valley, traveled to Smithville Friday night for a controlled scrimmage.
Each team ran 12 plays on offense beginning on the opponent’s 35-yard line with four plays to gain a first down. If a team scored, did not pick up a first down or turned the ball over, the series would start over on the 35 until the offense had 12 snaps.
Along with facing different colored uniforms for the first time this season, all three teams had to battle through a slow, but steady rain throughout the evening. Because of the weather, the night began approximately 15 minutes earlier than scheduled.
Richmond began by facing the host Warriors in their first scrimmage of the night.
The Spartan offense got the ball first and managed to reach the end zone once with Quinton Maxwell scoring on a one-yard plunge into the line after Mahki White set up the score with a 10-yard run up the middle.
Richmond did turn the ball over on an interception in the end zone on the fourth play of the night.
